Max Spearfishing is a labour of love, built to help you find gear that actually works and skills that actually stick. We’d rather send you to the right speargun than the most expensive one, and we’d rather tell you to save your money than sell you something you don’t need.

To keep the site running, we sometimes earn a commission when you buy through our links. Here’s exactly how that works, and what it does and doesn’t change.

How we make money

Three ways:

Affiliate commissions. If you click a link to a retailer and buy something, that retailer pays us a small percentage of the sale.
Our own products. We write and sell spearfishing guides directly through this site.
Sponsored content, occasionally, and always clearly labelled.

You never pay a cent extra. The price is identical whether you use our link or type the retailer’s address in yourself. The commission comes out of the retailer’s margin, not your pocket.

What we’ve tested, and what we haven’t

This matters, so we’ll be blunt about it.

Some of the gear on this site we’ve owned and dived for years. Some we’ve had our hands on for a season. Some we’ve borrowed off mates and put through a few dives. And some we haven’t personally used — for those, we’ve done the research, read the specs, dug through what experienced spearos are saying, and formed a view.

We tell you which is which on each page. If a review says we’ve dived it, we’ve dived it. If we’re recommending something based on research rather than water time, we say so. We’d rather be useful and honest than pretend we’ve personally tested every speargun ever made.

What we won’t do is recommend something we don’t believe in. No exceptions, regardless of what it pays.

Discount codes

We only publish discount codes supplied to us directly by the retailer or through their official affiliate program. We don’t scrape codes from deal sites, and we don’t publish codes we can’t verify are current and valid.

If a code on our site doesn’t work, tell us and we’ll pull it.

Cookies and tracking

When you click an affiliate link, the retailer or their affiliate network sets a cookie in your browser so they know the visit came from us. That’s how the commission gets attributed. These cookies are set by third parties, not by us.
